Steindamm, built as early as 1593, was the first paved street to be built outside of Hamburg's city walls. Around 1880, Steindamm developed into a main shopping street with four-storey apartment buildings throughout. The existing building Steindamm 22, dating from the 1970s, is a foreign body within the block edge development and is to be completely renovated and converted into a student residence with approx. 270 apartments. The building will be given new facades to ensure appropriate integration into the surrounding area.
