Lingang, China

The design relates to the construction of the new port city "Lingang New City", 60 km from Shanghai. The concept for the new city is the winning proposal submitted by the Hamburg architect Meinhard von Gerkan for an international competition held in 2002. By the year 2010 the city’s population is already expected to be 800,000. Reason enough to ask von Gerkan and six former students and employees from the gmp office, all by now successfully running their own architecture firms in Hamburg, to draft designs for one of Lingang’s 14 quarters - the Hamburg Quarter. The key question is, what transpires when Hamburg architects transfer their ideas to Shanghai? How does their cultural disposition based on central European values and thinking stand up to this shift to the Far East?
