Like the majority of Germany’s historic railway stations, Berlin’s landmarked Bahnhof Zoo station has a central hall. When ICE trains were introduced in the 1980s, these halls ceased to provide the desired comfort in terms of shelter from the weather. To remedy this situation, a platform roof design was developed for Zoo mainline station in tune with historic preservation concerns and technical guidelines for railway stations, yet which still articulates its own architectural vision.
